The McKinsey Recruiting Process Steps

The McKinsey recruiting process usually consists of eight steps.

Step1: Prepare your CV to send to McKinsey

The first of which is your CV preparation. Prepare it properly! Follow the advice you find on YouTube channels like Gabriel Goldbrain's or any other channel for setting up a decent and conservative CV.

Step2: Send your CV to McKinsey

Once you're ready with your CV, then comes the Second Step. You send your CV to McKinsey or any other consulting firm you apply to. And then some of the offices, they will collect the CVs for a while. Others will have strict deadline which they communicate until which they collect the CVs.

Step3: McKinsey will Process your CV

And then they process your CV. That is the third step when they check your CV if it matches their criteria. They want to see entrepreneurial skills. They want to see leadership skills. They want to see good grades and basically everything which we keep talking about in all of our videos. If they like your CV, they will reach out to you. This can happen. I mean if they work with a deadline you pretty much know when it may happen. So usually, it takes about 2 weeks until they get back to you. Sometimes one week. But in some cases like in offices which don't stick to deadlines, it can happen very quickly. They may call you 3 days after you submitted your CV.

Step4: How to prepare for the McKinsey Solve Online Assessment?

And boom you're in the middle of step four which is the solve online assessment. 60% fail it and you may be in that situation, about 1 to 2 weeks in the worst case, after you submitted submitted your CV. That's a situation you want to avoid. You don't want to get into this situation. And this is why you should start preparing for your application to management consulting firms ideally 3 months before you send any application. It can be 2-1 month. is very tight. Can be done. But it's tight. So prepare well before you apply to consulting firms because you don't want to get into these kind of situations. We recommend that you start preparing for the Consulting interviews after you submit your bachelor's or Master thesis or when you ended your MBA. Don't waste too much time traveling the world or if you do weave the preparation in. Do about half a day of preparation over a period of 1 to 3 months. It's better to if you take two before you send your first CVs out. So what is step four exactly about? What is the solve online assessment? It's kind of a gamified assessment which does not require any business knowledge. Or yeah! Any domain knowledge. But it tests your analytical skills. So, although McKinsey, they claim you can't cannot prepare for this assessment. For sure you can! I mean it's always an advantage if you've seen it. If you have seen the look and feel of the game. If you seen what about you will deal with.

And that's why Goldbrain prepared a video series on that matter. You will find it on our Channel. Make sure you subscribe so that you don't miss any updates on the online assessment because it may be crucial for your career.

Step5: McKinsey First Round Interviews (What are they and how to ace them?)

Once you mastered the online assessment you will find yourself in Step five of the McKinsey recruiting process which is the first round interviews. In this interview round about 75% of the candidates, which make it to that level. They will fail! And why is this? It's because of a lack in preparation. You may find yourself within 3 weeks in the situation that you have to master the first round interviews. Usually it's 6 weeks. But use the time! Prepare well! Practice cases! Get proper training from professionals! Not from students like you! Because they don't know what matters. Make sure that you can deal with cases like calculating the potential damage of a landfall, of a hurricane in Eastern Florida. Make sure you can handle the optimization of the footprint of a global industrial manufacturer.  Make sure you're not surprised when you're asked to develop the market entry strategy for a leading retailer in South America or in Asia. This kind of things should not surprise you should! Not Shock you! And you should be able to master them, having a good structure, having good presentation skills, when you do it because this is what you need to succeed in the first and second round interviews in McKinsey.

Step6: McKinsey Second Round Interviews

Now we come to the sixth step which is the second round interviews. About half of the candidates fail these rounds. Which is with more senior Partners. It's pretty much similar like the first round interviews.

Goldbrain Video About McKinsey First and Second Round Interviews

If you want to know more about the interviews. What is the key building blocks of these interviews? What is the focus of first and second round interviews? We prepared a video on the McKinsey interviews. You will find it on our Channel. I will link it at the end of our videos.

Step7: Getting an offer with McKinsey and Negotiating

When you master the second round interviews, you will receive an offer. And this is Step seven usually there is not too much to negotiate. Particularly, the more Junior roles you take the less you can negotiate. The more senior you are, there are some negotiation points. Maybe if they make you like a junior engagement manager, a senior engagement manager, a junior partner. Whatsoever! So there is some negotiation room at the more senior roles. But at the junior roles, usually there is not much to negotiate. So they will send you pretty much a boilerplate offer. Sometimes they will ask you if you for the salary which you expect. And then just tell them what do you know from your preparation. Maybe if you're applying as an associate, you can say I would expect in the US $190,000 gross salary and you should be fine. If you're in the ballpark range or you say $170,000 to $190,000. They will be fine and they will send you off. Which then they expect that you accept it within a relatively short period of time. Some consultancies they expect you to make your decision within 2 weeks. Some will give you 4 weeks. It's also regional thing but be prepared that you have a very short time frame to make your decision. And why is that? That's because they now know you're part of the 1%! You're a guy that they want! And they want to make sure that you don't sign up with any other consulting firms! They want you to stop the recruiting process and to sign the offer with them! Because that's you're the guy! Because they're doing all this effort, doing the whole screening process and they want you to become part of their team.

Step8: The job at McKinsey starts (Starting date and other options)

Once you decided to sign the offer from McKinsey, you will find yourself in Step eight of the recruiting process. The actual job start! The starting date is something you usually put into your CV or cover letter, when you apply, when you tell McKinsey which is like the ideal date you want to start. Typically it's about 4 to 6 months after you submit your CV and application. During that time, you could do some recreational holiday. But you could also take some training.

Summarizing PowerPoint Slide of the McKinsey Recruiting Process steps

I prepared a slide for you which summarizes the McKinsey recruiting process. It gives you an example of a deadline driven process where McKinsey usually sets a deadline every quarter. Until which they collect applications. And after which they process it. But don't be surprised if particularly in other regions, in smaller offices, they follow a different approach and you will be in an interview much faster than seen on this slide. Because they don't handle that much applications. They maybe have some pressing needs for Consultants because they need to staff some projects. So make sure that you're prepared whatever happens. Just take this one as a typical process. But it may be faster in in some cases. Be prepared for that! I have two video recommendations for you. The first video is about the McKinsey interview structure and building blocks and the second video is about McKinsey entry points so that you find the optimal role which you should apply for depending on your qualification and experience.
